TRAI wants mandatory KYC of DTH set-top boxes – Details here

TRAI is looking to make more amendments on DTH and Cable TV to the new regulations, it has taken another step in ensuring better services for customers by implementing a KYC system for all customers.

All DTH operators are now required to undertake a KYC process for their existing as well as new subscribers. The decision has been taken after consultation with all DTH operators and other stakeholders in the industry. New customers will now have to undergo a KYC process and operators have to reach out to existing customers for completing the KYC process within a span of two years.

The TRAI has ensured that the customer’s interest stays protected while the operator has access to basic information from the operators. In fact, the TRAI has laid out a list of all the Do’s and Don’t’s for the DTH operators.

What the TRAI needs DTH operators to do :-

1. A representative of a particular DTH operator will need to verify the address of the customer before installing the box and it should be only installed on the address that’s mentioned on the Customer Application Form. On top of that, the operator should also maintain the record of the installation.

2. DTH operators will need to verify the customer’s identity with the help of a One Time Password (OTP). In case the customer doesn’t have a mobile connection, the operator is required to verify the identity of the customer using other Proof of Identity in either electronic or physical form.

3. For existing customers, DTH operators will need to undertake the KYC verification process by linking the Set-Top Boxes with a mobile number within a span of two years.

What DTH operators can’t do :-
