Track the status of your income tax refund

During FY 2018-19, if you have paid a higher tax to the government, then you are eligible to claim the refund amount. Once your income tax return (ITR) is processed, the tax department determines a refund payable to you after which an intimation is sent to you through SMS and email.

It may be noted that the possibility of income tax refund arises when an individual has filed an advance income tax return and the employer has deducted tax at source after which the total income tax paid exceeds the applicable income tax liability in the respective period.

The intimation received reflects the amount of refund that will be credited into your account along with a refund sequence number. This intimation is sent under section 143 (1) of the income tax Act.

Worth noting here is that from this year onwards, the tax department will issue e-refunds to those bank accounts where PAN is linked and pre-validated on the e-filing website.

It may be noted that the refund is processed by the State Bank of India (SBI). It is either sent to the taxpayer by directly crediting it into his or her account through RTGS or NEFT, or by issuing a cheque or demand draft (DD) and sending it to the registered address of the taxpayer. It is important to make sure that the bank account details are filled correctly.
